Severe Thunderstorms Cause Major Flooding and Multiple Water Rescues in Kansas City Metro

Thunderstorms hit Kansas City on Monday, bringing almost seven inches of rain in six hours. The southern part of Kansas City got the most rain, with 6.62 inches recorded near 87th Lane and Mill Creek in Lenexa.

Due to the heavy rain, the weather service issued several flash flood warnings. The rain caused creeks to overflow and streets to flood. Some drivers got stuck and had to be rescued. For example, on East 99th Street near Indian Creek, a car was found empty when rescue crews arrived, according to Michael Hopkins from the Kansas City Fire Department.

In Overland Park, several intersections were closed due to flooding but later reopened. These included West 79th Street and Frontage Road, West 95th Street and Outlook Drive, and West 119th Street from Grant Street to Three Lakes Parkway. Officer John Lacy from the police department said no water rescues were needed, but the fire department helped people out of flooded areas. Jason Rhodes from the fire department said the water was about waist-deep at its highest point.

At 124th and Nall, crews rescued people from flooded cars. No one was hurt, and the water went down quickly.

Leawood police warned drivers to be careful because of flooding. At one point, State Line Road north of Interstate 435 and Tomahawk Creek Parkway were impassable due to high water. They had to help some people whose cars got stuck in the water. Prairie Village police shared photos of flooding along Brush Creek at Mission Drive in Mission Hills and reminded people to stay safe and avoid flooded areas.

Grandview police reported that six different roads in the city flooded and needed detours, but there were no water rescues.
